Gotta admit, i too was sad that portugal wasnt playable, my family is portuguese (though im the first born in america) and i would have loved to play them. Rome 2 will have far more factions than ever before, about 120 or so, and only 12 are playable, but that is already as many or more than pretty much all total war titles previously. In more recent games they have fleshed out the AI factions much more, and that is a good thing, making them into good unique playable factions is another matter. In the past, for example rome 2, you had a number of playable factions, and the the rest of the map was owned by a generic "rebel" faction, which is obviously ridiculous, but thats what they could do at the time.
